UVIC Philosophy Students' Sailing Trip

by Ryan Vetter

October 12, 2002

The sun was out and the sky clear, as Bob Dorion, skipper of Fast Forward, shoved off from the Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club with six University of Victoria philosophy students as his crew.

Most of the students had little or no experience sailing, but all got a chance to learn, as Bob guided and directed the crew, teaching them various sailing techniques. On the sail out, the crew was shifty, still learning where the corners and crevasses of the boat were. On the way back in, the crew was working smoothly with the boat making its way at a decent speed. The wind was calm, but the debates between the students on board kept things exciting. These philosophy students were learning how to sail, running around the boat, and at the same time continuing their conversations with one another - sometimes at opposite ends of the boat - on topics ranging from Utilitarianism to Solipsism.

On behalf of those that attended, a special thanks goes out to Bob Dorion for providing the fun and exciting ride.
